If you look online for the number of persons without any form of medical insurance, you still find that in 2004 "45.8 million people were without health insurance coverage, up from 45.0 million people in 2003."
Source: Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2004 [PDF] report, page 23.

Investigating what "health insurance coverage" meant in the report, I found this: "The CPS ASEC asks about health insurance coverage in the previous calendar year. The questionnaire asks separate questions about the major types of health insurance and people who answer “no” to each of these questions are then asked to verify that they were, in fact, not covered by any type of health insurance. For the purpose of this report, the Census Bureau broadly classifies health insurance coverage as private or government coverage. Private health insurance is coverage by a plan provided through an employer or union or purchased by an individual from a private company. Government health insurance includes the federal programs Medicare, Medicaid, and military health care; the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP); and individual state health plans.* People were considered “insured” if they were covered by any type of health insurance for part or all of the previous year, and everyone else was considered uninsured."
"* Types of insurance are not mutually exclusive and people may be covered by more than one during the year."
The reader is then referred to Appendix E for more information.

45.8 million people is alot of people without coverage of any sort. It is these Americans who have to decide between healthcare and a roof over their heads, or healthcare and heat, or healthcare and food.
That's PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE.

Those who are on MA do NOT need private medical insurance!
Those who are on Medicair - and a whole host of other publicly-funded programs, do NOT need private medical insurance.

It's time to start looking beyond the liberals and their flagrant lies!

You know, that's exactly what I thought, which is why I read the PDF file to see what they were including as insured. I found that they were including both private and governmental as insurance, not just private. Please go back and reread my post or the source it came from.

It is against the law to deny needed health care to anyone in this country. Everyone can get health care no matter what.

Can you get eyeglasses or eye surgery in the E.R.?

Can you get your prescriptions given for free at the E.R.?

Can you get heart/brain surgery in the E.R. if you have heart disease or a brain tumor?

It's true that the E.R. cannot refuse E.R. care - E.R. care is emergency trauma and illness. They do NOT treat disease nor give preventitive medicine.

Aug. 30, 2005 - The number of Americans without health insurance rose by 800,000 last year, reaching a record high of nearly 46 million, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

Officials blamed the increase in part on the continuing erosion of workplace-sponsored health insurance. A majority of Americans still get their coverage by sharing costs with their employer, though a smaller and smaller percentage of American jobs are now accompanied by medical benefits.

The number of Americans with no private or public medical coverage increased from 45 million in 2003 to 45.8 million in 2004, though the percentage of the population without insurance held steady at 15.7%.

Twenty-one million full-time workers had no health insurance in 2004, a 0.6% increase from the previous year, census officials said.

Public Insurance vs. Private Insurance

Officials attributed that overall stability to public insurance programs for the poor, including Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Those programs saw a half-percent increase in coverage rates, nearly offsetting insurance losses in private insurance.

At the same time, 11.2% of American children remained uninsured in 2004, according to the figures.

Medical groups and advocacy organizations have urged elected officials to tackle the rising number of uninsured Americans, though the issue has proved to be one of the most politically contentious long-term issues in Washington.

Yup, they can get the health care and then the bills for it. If you don't qualify for governmental healthcare coverage, and you don't have health insurance through your employer, or adequate insurance, that's what happens.

And if you work in healthcare, and you find out that folks can't pay their bills let alone have a Christmas, you hold fundraisers to help them out.

And if you're connected with the medical community - which I thought you were - you would know that EVERY hospital basically writes off these bills as uncollectable. Period.

They can even take the person to court, but it's still the hospital's responsibility to collect - and that rarely happens. They know they're not getting the money anyway, so they write it off.

Look into it.

If you need glasses you can get them. I donate my old ones to Lens Crafters who give them to charity.

There is no such thing as "free" prescriptions. Nothing is "free". Someone has to pay for it. I pay for my prescriptions.

Tell me who has refused brain surgery or heart surgery on a patient who needs it?
