This quote - from page 23 of the report you linked - is all you need to see. It's a confession and an admission... Perhaps you mis-read the report!

"Research shows health insurance coverage is underreported in the CPS ASEC for a variety of reasons."

In other words, they're admitting that there are MORE PEOPLE HAVE HEALTH COVERAGE THAN THE REPORT SHOWS.

What does that say to you?

Now here's another FACT you cannot deny:
Medical Assistance is available to ALL LOW INCOME FAMILIES. State programs like MinnesotaCare are available to ALL MIDDLE-INCOME FAMILIES. A family of 4 that makes over $55,000 per year CAN AFFORD TO BUY THEIR OWN PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE.

So... Every family, with an income of less than $55,000 per year, can get state-funded medical coverage
. Only families with an income of over $55,000 per year are NOT eligible for government-assisted healthcare coverage.

HOW IN HECK DO YOU THINK THIS MAKES 40 MILLION AMERICANS WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE? If they don't have health-care coverage, it's because they're CHOOSING NOT TO. The poor in America get government healthcare. Those who are NOT poor can afford to buy it.

WHY DON'T THESE WEALTHY PEOPLE HAVE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE?

Here's another way of looking at it:
1. Every family of four, with an income of less than $55,000 per year is eligible for some sort of government-assisted medical coverage. THAT INCLUDES ALL OF AMERICA'S "POOR".

2. Every family that has more than a $55,000 per year income CAN AFFORD TO PURCHASE THEIR OWN HEALTH INSURANCE. Why aren't they? A family that makes $55,000 per year is making over $4,500 per month. WHY AREN'T THEY PURCHASING HEALTH INSURANCE FOR $500 PER MONTH? It's because they're choosing NOT to.

3. Hospitals and doctors, across the nation, write off hundreds of millions of dollars per year in health-care costs. In other words, people have gotten treatment, but NEVER PAY FOR IT.

Perhaps what some of these "supposed" 40 million people ought to do is SELL THEIR BOAT AND GET HEALTH INSURANCE! Do you suppose that's a possibility? Perhaps they should ask themselves what they need worse: A 6,000 square foot house, or health insurance. Perhaps people who are buying new pickups should be buying health insurance instead!

Perhaps people should take a little personal responsibility!

Some people may be homeless for a short period and then find a home, while another family may lose theirs at the same time. Some stay with relatives, some live in parks, cars, and so forth. The Coalition also gives a national guestimate:

"The best approximation is from a study done by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty which states that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2004)."

They noted that the guestimate was based on service providers, and that not all homeless people used service (shelter) providers.

Homeless persons probably qualify for government assistance with medical care, but may not apply for it. My guess is that the guestimate is not included in the 40 million without health insurance, simply because they visited homes.

The Coalition also put out other flyers, including one on Healthcare and Homelessness (PDF).
In other words, you're admitting - by this information as well - that that famous "40 million Americans without health-care" is BS.

It's made up numbers, exaggerated for political reasons and financial gain!

I've worked with homeless people and transients for YEARS. And believe me, if you've not been with them, worked with them, and know how they operate - you have NO BUSINESS making assumptions about them, especially in regards to health coverage.

About the same thing can be said for counting the uninsured, because that is a rolling figure, and most are not uninsured for an entire year.

BECAUSE hospitals and doctors have to write off so much from the uninsured, many of whom are illegals, they bill insurance companies much much more than the actual cost of service, making insurance coverage more and more expensive all the time. And yes, many of those uninsured have elected to be uninsured. Wasn't it Massachusetts that recently passed a bill making having insurance coverage mandatory for everyone?

What's the point of this discussion? Are we talking about what would be the best solution, or just throwing stones?

Indeed.

And questions are often skewed. For instance, "Have you been without health insurance in the last 18 months?" If a person answers "yes", they're counted as having no health insurance - regardless of the fact that it might have been for 6 weeks when they were between jobs.

All these supposed "facts and figures" are very skewed, very slanted, and very politically motivated.

The insured pay for the uninsured. That is why our medical bills are so inflated, to cover the cost of those who receive care and can't pay. No one is losing money.

How many of those without health insurance are illegals?

It's STUPID to make health insurance mandatory. That's nothing more than socialized health care.

And the point of this thread is roughly the point of every OTHER thread on this forum. It's to blow crap around and argue.

MY point in bringing things up is to PROVE that this whole "millions and millions of Americans with no health-care" mantra is a bunch of BS.

If you don't want to be a part of it, don't be a part of it.

That's how it works EVERYWHERE in EVERY business.

The paying customers, at (for instance) WalMart, pay higher prices because of those who steal.
The paying customers pay higher interest on credit cards to pay for those who default.
The paying customers pay higher mortgage rates to cover those louts that default on their mortgages.

Perhaps the teenagers here just haven't been in the real world long enough to know that that's how it works everywhere. Unfortunate, yes. But it's reality.

They also are counting children of parents who are covered and Illegals into those inflated numbers.

I am astounded that there are people on this board arguing that the U.S. does not have a health insurance problem.
Proof, indeed, that some people will argue over the color of grass - and will debate the source when proven it's green when shown a picture of grass.
