The fact is, this practice of going into an emergency room for care that should be taken care of in a doctor's office is putting a serious strain on hospitals, causing many of them to shut down their emergency rooms. People go to the emergency room just for the reason that they can't be turned away, and the hospitals usually end up eating it.

What's really bad is the price of emergency care is way higher then a doctor's office, but because these people don't have insurance they do what they need to do to get care.

Let's face it, the provision of healthcare in the US is badly screwed up, grossly inefficient and unnecessarily expensive.

I'm a capitalist in general but I think that there is an overwhelming case for universal health coverage in the US

The problem is that poor people get sick too - it's not a consumer choice. And those with insurance end up subsidising those without.

Every other industrialised nation on earth has some form of universal health care, so how come the US cannot afford it?

It may take another 50 years but eventually the US will have no choice but to catch up

Why has none of you even mentioned the plight of Lindsey McCreith, who was the subject of the video I posted at the start of this thread. You are all good at advancing theory but still short on proof. Profits are necessary for pharmaceutical companies to carry out research.
