Basic services such as sanitation are lacking, the people want to trade in Dollars instead of Pesos, and children rush to any one speaking English begging for change. The difference between the rich and the poor is staggering, and there isn't a visible middle class.

We put caps on our immigration, which is understandable for our security, but a visit to Mexico a person would be hard pressed not to look through an illegals eyes for just a moment. I'm not saying that breaking the law is justified, simply understandable.

I've also been to Mexico, numerous occasions. And yes, I understand why they want to be here, just like I understand why many people from other countries want to come here, and have come here for centuries.

Shall we compare them to the Irish of the 1800's? Those people were STARVING to death, but had to sacrifice much to get on a boat and then get processed LEGALLY through Ellis Island. Or the Chinese that came here in the 1800's and were treated as little more then slaves.

Yes, I understand and sympathize with why they want to be here. No problem. But I don't think that the citizens of the United States should have to pander to their needs.

Most of us? Sorry A1, but you're incorrect there. The MAJORITY OF US have said the complete opposite of your claims. The majority of us who have posted to this thread have always maintained that immigrants should LEGALLY enter our country, not the reverse.

The other side of the coin is:

1. Those Irish and Chinese immigrants didn't have to spend 14 years going through a green card application process. If they got here they were accepted as legitimate immigrants.

2. Today similar cases would probably qualify for political asylum, in which case they go to the front of the queue

3. However much people don't want to admit it, illegal immigrants from latin america are a necessary part of the US work force. The country would be worse off without them. Otherwise they wouldn't keep coming here and Americans wouldn't keep giving them jobs.

I'm not arguing against immigration controls, just saying the US has done a lousy job of it compared to other new world countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sth Africa, etc

Illegal immigration has almost no net effect on the economy. If undocumented immigrants are taking away jobs from Americans it is usually in the demographic of high school drop-outs.

A very high percentage of Mexican-Americans that come here illegaly may not have high educations, but they work extremely hard doing some of the hardest jobs in the country. There is no such thing as a lazy Mexican.
