being native american, born and raised on my reservation the whole "speak english" crap is very insulting to me..

while english may have over time been adopted as our "national language" is wasnt the original language of this country..

each of the 526 federally recognised tribal nations of this country had thier own unique dialect and NONE of them was english...

Where I live english is a 2nd language and will always remain so...

with all the hate over immigration and the hate of forigners to our lands, it makes me wish the indian nations would of had a better thought process in place when we were invaded by the pilgrims..

it just seems to me that there is a double standard in our country, that it was OK when my family came here but screw you stay out of MY country when someone else trys to come here..

I wish I knew more languages.

Americans are the only people in the industrialized world who aren't at least bi-lingual. How shameful.

I know only a few dozen words and various phrases in German and Spanish -- and many of those are cuss-words or insults. Ha, typical ugly American, me.

I agree, Scout.

When my Germanic and Celtic anscestors came here, those who liked to think they were "real" Americans were saying.."Friggin' Krauts... frigging Mick Irish..... why don't they go back home?"

Now, decendants of those very people are saying the same about Mexicans.

Ah, the irony.

True.

That's why I love to hear Americans insist that everyone speak English.

It can't happen soon enough for me!

Fifty Years of Math 1957 - 2007

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:
1. Teaching Math In 1950s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100 His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number
20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990s
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.)

6. Teaching Math In 2007
Un hachero vende una carretada de madera para $100. El costo de los producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

That's good, Gary. I also think that the evolution of computers has contributed to the educational problem with our children today- they simply have forgotten the basics and now rely on machines to do this for them. Personally, I wouldn't want to entrust money from a place of business that I may own or operate to someone that cannot do basic arithmetic.

I wonder what Gary's reaction was when the young lady didn't know quite what to do with the change he gave her, and she was embarrassed by it?

I guess we rely on computers and cash registers too much to find how much change the customer gets. I'd bet that the cashier was new to that. Seems like Gary taught her a lesson in math.
