Madonna Adopts African Boy

Okay, okay... This might not be the best sub-forum for this topic, but the Mods can move it if they want.

So I'm reading that Madonna & Guy Richie are in the process of adopting a 1-year old boy from Malawi.

And I'm also reading that there's getting to be quite a backlash over it.

What the heck?

I'm one of (probably) millions that thinks Madonna is a slut and hypocrite, but what the heck? Why would people be upset that this boy is going to be removed from squalor, disease, poverty - to be taken to live in the lap of luxury in Britain or America?

Makes no sense to me!

It doesn't make sense to me either. Seems to me that this is the kind of immigration anyone could support. {by the way, I think your choice of forum is fine}

Someone will find something bad in any situation I suppose.

Malawi has extremely strict adoption laws. I know four families that have adopted Malawian children, and it is a very tedious process, encumbered further by an inept and corrupt bureaucracy. And these are families that have not removed the kids from their culture.

Two of my best friends were adopted from Honduras, they were removed from their culture, but they were also afforded a better life. They are both now college educated, one living abroad, and both seem very happy.

Culture is not everything.

Some good friends of mine just returned from China with a little girl they adopted. They jumped through hoops for 2 years for this!

Again, it makes no sense.

While I commend the Chinese government for not wanting to adopt babies out to "just anybody", it makes no sense to have millions of unadopted Chinese babies laying in orphanages, while the government makes it virtually impossible for good people to adopt these babies.

Culture is not everything.

True. It's interesting that the experts in the article seem to value "culture" so highly. The great thing about adoption is that the child can be placed in a stable family, regardless of the culture they are in.

The experts are liberals. They love culture no matter how backwards, evil, or perverted it is, it must be preserved. That's why Janet Reno sent that boy back to communist Cuba.
