And to the 19 traffic volations that they compounded during the time they were here Illegally....the SJC has come up with 42....FORTY FRICKEN TWO...pages of civil and law infractions too including Drug, DUI, Assult, threating people with physical force. And because they were in a state that does not abide by background checks to check legal status....they were let off everytime.

Sad thing is this is the same thing that is going on with Patrick and and the state if Mass. I say if something like this happens here at the air force base over in burlington(cant remember though i pass it every day to work) Gov. Patrick should be held legally liable for the deaths that happen because of HIS POLOCIES!

It would be nice if we had a choice between being realistic and following the law. With the laws that are NOT being enforced, that is the choice we are supposed to make.There is no doubt that we are a country of immigrants and most of us are proud to come from those same immigrants. However, LEGAL immigration is not ILLEGAL immigration. I will welcome LEGAL immigrants with open arms and an open heart. What I will not do is agree that because there are so many, we should just give them whatever they want.

Think people would go back home if they knew that they would NOT get what they want(becoming a citizen of the USA) if they are caught here? That the ONLY way that they can legally become a U.S. Citizen is if they actually follow our LAWS! What a ground-breaking idea! NOT getting what you want by spitting on our laws. Think that might help? Think it might help them decide to go home if we ACTUALLY enforce our laws, to the point where business-owners will be afraid to hire them, because they can be shut down and go to jail? I'm wondering if - buried somewhere in the new law Congress is proposing - there might, just MIGHT be a requirement to assimilate....to become Americans if they intend to stay. Does the Congress think we should accept the Mexicanization of California and Texas, and the Islamization of Dearborn? Is anything mentioned about accepting English as the primary language?

Or are they making a deal that just compounds the problems created by a huge influx of illegal immigrants and still they get to remain strangers in our country?

I'm afraid what they have come up with is going to be difficult as I don't frankly see every illegal actually appearing to apply for a visa.....they won't. I don't really expect every employer to use the checking system... how is that going to work? How will the government KNOW if they are? Wait until someone reports them? So, we will all be reporting on our neighbors, reporting on our bosses....... I don't see this as good, and I don't see it working.

Ii think they have come up with a "feel good" law, like so many gun-free zones....and it won't really achieve anything.

Firm and tough border control MUST come first, not as an afterthought, and then there will be lots of people going home and not being able to come back....

I'm wondering how exactly one might assimilate into "American". What exactly is American? Anglo-saxon? How can one assimilate into a cultureless (multi-cultured) and raceless (multi-racial) society. Unless of course you're talking about the Native Americans...which in case the Anglo-Saxons, not the Mexicans, will be the ones needing to do the assimilating.

I agree. And the ones who do play by the rules could be forced to be separated from their families.

The only decent and workable way this problem is going to be fixed, is first take steps at securing the border (technology, not fences), and then full amnesty for the people already living here and playing by the rules.

Sometimes when you post something like you've just posted here, I wonder if you're not thinking? or just being argumentive?

What is an American? It's someone who loves freedom. It's someone who loves the Constitution and all that's written there. It's someone who wants truly to live free and appreciates, i.e., doesn't abuse the privilege. Not someone who wants to come to change everything to the deplorable conditions they just left, or freeload.

Saying that we (Anglo Saxons) would have to be the ones assimilating is just plain, I'm sorry, stupid. You and I and everyone else knows this country will never be handed back to the Indians. That is a stupid argument. It takes us nowhere.

Actually, if one believes the Manifest Destiny, this country is the land of milk and honey that God promised Abraham's descendants. And it wasn't intended for everyone and their dog to come here. Now I know you certainly don't want to hear that argument, and neither do I want to argue it. We can take it up another time. But right now, I have to make sure our borders are secure and that takes a lot of time and dedication.

The 14th amendment does not say that anyone born on this soil is an automatic citizen. It was written the way it was to give the newly-freed slaves citizenship as they had not previously been considered human much less citizens. A baby born in the United States to parents that are illegal, is also illegal (not a citizen). Yes, it's sad that children born on U.S. soil, grew up here would have to leave. But you know what? Children whose fathers screw around on their mothers also have it bad. That's what happens when parents break the law. There are painful consequences for innocent parties. That's life!
