| Hi to all, (first posted around Dec 3) Hi, I've been writing bits and pieces for a few days now on the forum. Mostly in the religious and political type sections. I've been a life-long student of religion, mostly ancient religion, especially Ancient Egyptian because there is such a wealth of it's history and development. I studied biblical history, and really still do, though I am not a believer. I believe the message of Christ got lost in the founding of churches, but I don't believe his message was as unique as we have been led to believe. (A lot of his ideas were passed down from the religion of Ancient Egypt). I don't profess to know everything, but I do believe that if we truly did unto others as we would have them do unto us, the world would be a much kinder place. I have studied women's history and it really pisses me off. I think there is still a lot that needs to be done to improve the condition of women around the world, and still here in the U.S. Discrimination is alive and well. As the daughter of a single mother, I have seen it first hand. It is kept alive in people's attitudes and media depictions of women, even if it is unlawful and biased. Double standards infiltrate all of our institutions. Since most of the poverty in the world effects women, their offspring, and the elderly, the systems that exploit them need to be replaced. I study history in general. I think it is very beneficial to be able to see the foundation and development of human civilization, so that we can learn from our mistakes as we move forward in time. Politically, I'm an independent. I don't believe that the 2 party system is suited to the diversity that we have in the American population. I am not as formally educated as I can be. I am attending college in addition to working full-time to help support my family. I work in a non-profit marine animal research group. I am environmentally conscious. My work helps me to understand the impact humanity has on the environment of all living things and the dangers we face as a species as a direct result of our own actions. The more we learn, the better we can make this world for all species, including ourselves. The evolve I have on my signature means what it implies. I think it's time that we use our intelligence to start solving the problems of the world, developing technologies that are non-polluting and renewable and cost efficient. Profit may drop for big companies, but at what cost are you willing to sacrifice your health and that of the planet. When the oceans die, we all die. Do not doubt it, they are dying. I believe that in today's world economy the education we receive in public school is inadequate. Better education is key to a better future. Educating our people should be a priority. I believe education can be used to combat poverty, as long as the skills acquired won't be obsolete in three years. This seems to happen more and more, especially with globalization. In addition, "unskilled labor", which is physically grueling, should pay more. Those who kill themselves for the benefit of others should be compensated. Something is wrong with a society that chooses to elevate entertainers and game players to the status we do. We worship these people as gods, when most of them have more problems than we do. Organized sports are fun, they teach you how to work with others, (usually), and they are able to bring people of all walks of life together in a common cause. Movies and music are able to get us in touch with our emotional side, bring us experiences and perspectives that differ from our own, or they give us something to relate to. However, the value that we place on these things is outrageous. I wouldn't want to support some of these people's lifestyles. I might not want to associate with them in "real life", or have them influencing me or my family, but by paying the price for a movie ticket or buying a CD because I like a song, I am, in fact, supporting them. I don't want to support drug habits, sexploitation, and medically unnecessary plastic surgery to name a few. In the back of my head though, I know I do. The same line of thought follows me through every purchase I make. I wonder how much the people get paid for the time it took them to create a pair of jeans I buy for $35, right down to the cotton pickers. So, this is me. I may worry about a lot of things I have no control over, but in order to be able to function in the society I live in, I feel that I have to at least make an effort to understand them, and speak out against the things I feel are harmful to the progression of humanity. It's who I am. Our Task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, the whole of nature, and its beauty.
