This is how it all came about.

In the beginning, Mark and I each made another character, so that we could 'test' stuff without our *important admin* hats on, then when it was a bit quiet in the early days, we would make a post in our 'other' name, to try to start some discussion. (Some boards e.g. Tiscali call this 'seeding', and their mods are encouraged to do it.)
Later, when our Village Forum was in its hay day (or is that hey day?) we allowed all members to make another account (or two) for a Village Battle, which raged for a couple of days, and had thousands of posts, and many of the characters were killed and/or eaten by others. Most of the 'Battle' names were never used again.
Then we had a Masked Ball, where once more members could make up another name, and were supposed to reveal who they 'really' were at midnight.
Needless to say some never revealed who they were.......

As time has gone on, many of the alternative characters have become 'real' people, and tbh I am never sure who anyone is these days, apart from the ones I have actually met IRL.

Our moderators cannot see IPs, and in any case it is very easy in the U.K. to use a 'dial-up' and have a new IP for each character change.

I think seeding is a standard practice in young forums.

I like the masked ball idea though...
