Garysher and Baloney Detector,

Those were all excellent words concerning a lasting relationship with the one you love.

I might add that within the sphere of being friends, I have noticed my brother who has a successful and loving marriage of 36 years now...he and his wife take up some new interest together every once in awhile. Like they have their dogs, and they took up ballroom dancing, and they do kareoke together.

But just as true, they also have some individual interests that they continue to do too. Like she takes up new arts and crafts projects and he hunts.

That way they can also come together and share things about their time apart and while growing individually, they can affirm each other.

In a healthy marriage there are three elements that are critical, LOVE, COMMITMENT and MATURITY.

Maturity makes one able to look at situations realistically and come to compromises. Commitment feeds the maturity, because a person is not willing to throw away a relationship for foolish reasons, and love feeds them both because it allows you to 'sometimes ignore the logical mature answer' in favor of making a partner happy and forgive errors.

Some good answers.

And I'm noticing none of them have to do with being swept up in the uncontrolled passions of giddy "love."

Again, I suspect if you try to base your marriage only on that, you should not be suprised when it goes down the crapper.
