If I lived a bit closer I'd be happy to get under your bonnet and find out what's wrong. However California is a looooong way from Hicksville, Minnesota and it's bloody cold up there!

I think you should look out for a guy wearing jeans, a chequered shirt and driving an F-150. I bet there's quite a few around!

Better than Rednecksburg, Ohio.

(Pun on "Reynoldsburg").

I'm a male, and don't know much about cars. Nor do I really care (though I'm sure I will). Is this a contradiction?

How about this..take it to your local Auto Zone and have them pull the engine codes (this is free). Then come back to Defending the Truth, post your engine codes, and I will look them up for you and give you my auto expertise

Thank you! I did go back in and screw my gas cap on tight. I read that is enough to signal a Check Engine. But that after fixing that, it takes a few days for the light to not come on. So I am waiting.

Today is a blizzard here. Snow day for the schools. Still, I have to go out in it soon, so I will see if on my way home, I can stop in at the Auto Zone as you suggest, and take you up on your kind offer.

That's seems like what a VP of a company I used to work for did to his 1977 Ford T-Bird. He thought too much of himself and neglected his car. He damaged it beyond repair. It became a company car later. I tried as hard as I can to keep it going, taking it into the shop. But it is like not caring for your teeth. Instead of preventive dentistry (routine maintenance), it became routine dentistry. Too many visits.

We finally had to get rid of the car, and get another company car. Grrrrrr!!!

The check engine light is generatored from your car's computer. Yes, even cheap cars have computers nowadays. It could mean almost anything. What a shop will do is hook your car's computer to their analyzer and load the software corresponding to your cars' make/model. Chances are it's a very minor thing unless you actually notice something wrong in your car engines performance (a sensor is picking up something out of parameter for example).

That being said, you may very well get away with not doing anything about it for a long time. You should have it checked out sure, but if your car seems to be running OK, you could blow it off for awhile too.
