You should ask the people of Zimbabwe how they feel about thugs and colonialism and freedom.

You may also want to ask the Australian aborigines and the American Indians!

I'm saying ask the people of Zimbabwe if they feel they are better off now being independent under Mugabe, when a loaf of bread costs a week's wages.

Ask a similar question to people in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and many other former colonies.

Your twee, dreamy PC outlook doesn't always correlate with reality.

When it comes to criticising others for committing genocide and practicing racism, the Americans and the Aussies are living in glass houses.

Well that's a relief!

My point was that the Brits also did a lot of good for the countries they colonised, it wasn't all bad.

And if you want to instill control and discipline in those situations then sometimes you have to be brutal.

This contrasts with the present occupation in Iraq where the coalition forces try to play by the rules whilst the insurgents don't have any rules.

If coalition forces in Iraq could have taken off the kid gloves there could have been far fewer deaths on both sides.

The Brits were embedded in what is now Iraq for 30 years after they kicked out The Ottoman Empire and could not keep the tribal factions from killing each other and them. It was never a successful occupation. If The George Bush Thugocracy had learned from the Brits, we would never have tried to occupy in the first place.

That's true in Iraq, we had softened up by the 1920's.

But if the Brits had occupied that country 100 or 200 years earlier it would have been a different story.

You won't get any disagreement from me there, but can imperialism on that level be justified for the ends?

I am torn on this issue, I know India would be a lot worse off than it is today if The Brits had not occupied for 200 years...on the other hand, they taught The Indians some really bad habits.

Have you watched the movie or followed the teachings of Matahma Gandhi?
