In Buffalo, our economy has collapsed since Bethlehem Steel moved to Mexico. Unskilled workers are basically out of luck, unless they intend to go into the service industry. Our population is hemmhoraging becuase there aren't profitable jobs for people. In the inner city, many people work two minimum wage jobs or more.
Maybe you should complain to your local union bosses (who have pillaged the coffers, and forced massive contributions to political candidates without consent) about Bethlehem Steel becoming un-profitable. Perhaps they can explain to you why they tried to force a corporation to pay $75,000 per year salaries for non-skilled workers. Perhaps they can also explain to you there own, personal, massive retirement funds they amassed at the expense of union dues.

Further, you really cannot blame Bethlehem Steel for moving operations to Mexico - where they can find a mass of workers who will actually WORK for their pay instead of sit around demanding more money, more vacations, more retirement, more benefits and more everything but work.

You cannot squeeze blood out of a turnip.

Actually, low union membership has resulted in dozens of helpless poor people who are too old to get new jobs calling my boss's office asking for help. They don't have retirement funds, so they don't have money for medical benefits. They were basically just cut off without a flotation device in the middle of an ocean of hopelessness.

I'm not blaming Bethlehem Steel, I'm saying your reasoning is uninformed.

My reasoning is uninformed? Hahahaha! That's good!

Low union membership is completely un-connected to what you're talking about. That's ridiculous and absurd.

Unions CANNOT "create" profitability in a non-profitable company. In fact, they do just the opposite in most cases. Though unions were once useful, they've now become (basically) parasites that are literally forcing companies out of the country.

Union bosses look out for THEMSELVES, first and foremest. They're no different from greedy CEOs.

You're oversimplifying the problem and pegging it on convenient (albeit totally incorrect) scapegoats.
