Let's not forget all the hatred that still goes on between catholics and protestants in Northern Ireland which, despite having calmed down significantly after the Good Friday Agreement, is still existent. That issue was just like Iraq, a cultural war with religion being a main aspect of the conflict, but neither protestants nor catholics are (usually) violent. They are driven to action by hate. Plain and simple.

Oh, yes, they are different. Hostility in Ireland goes back a few decades. In Iraq it's a few centuries. Hence, it was possible there, but not Iraq. Tensions run too deep to be mended withina few years.
