What's the deal with this '300' movie anyway? Hasn't this already been done before?

Back in the 60's there was a movie called "The 300 Spartans" based in the Battle of Thermopylae. That movie inspired Frank Miller to write the graphic novel "300" which is what this movie is based upon.

I am not sure I will like this rendition of the movie... I was not a big fan of his movie "Sin City".

Well I guess it would depend upon why you didn't like Sin City. That was a very stylized hyper-noir setting. 300 is more historical fiction meets fantasy action. Have you seen the trailers for it? It's going to be a violent, brutal, bloody movie. If that isn't your cup of tea then don't see it. (I saw Sin City with someone who said they weren't big on violent movies after the fact)

Really? I thought it was stunning. So much like the graphic novel. What did you not like about it?

So did anyone see the specials on the History Channel Wednesday and Thursday night about 300?

Wednesday, they were talking about the making of the movie itself and comparing it to the actual history. So there was ALOT of the movie clips in it and all I can say is WOW!!!

Then Thursday evening was about the 3 day battle and causes/results of that battle, along with more movie footage.

I missed that, but it looks to be great.

The movie and the history are very different. The movie will be a great epic action movie, the history is that there was an epic stand made by a small force that the Persian empire gained a pyrrhic victory over. Herodotus gives an entertaining narrative of the battle in his Histories. (He does get the size of the Persian army wrong, so did Simonides)

I know that silly. But that didn't make the specials on the history channel any less interesting to say the least. I was just wondering if anyone here watched it as well? And since they were doing the clips of the movie as well, giving viewers a chance to see the differences plus the great filming...

History fact: In the actual battle itself, there were 1,300 warriors. The Spartan 300 plus the 1,000 troops from Athens that were left after the other troops were sent back to prepare/defend Athens itself. Lore and rendering of the actual battle though, makes no mentioning (or brief mentioning) of these extra troops.

Face it...to make a movie of this magnitude, the last thing the director wants to do is actually stick to the actual history. Would make it way too boring and be a waste of computer graphics.
