CONCORD, N.H. - A New Hampshire National Guard soldier charged with desertion while trying to get custody of her 7-year-old daughter could get a hardship discharge from the Army soon — but might not get home in time for a court hearing on custody next week.

Spc. Lisa Hayes, 32, returned to the state on emergency leave from Iraq in late February, after learning police had twice been called to her ex-husband's home for domestic violence. At a court hearing in February, she won temporary primary custody of Brystal.

A guardian was ordered to investigate both homes and make a recommendation about who should have permanent physical custody of the girl. Hayes was granted three brief extensions on her leave, but the Army declared her AWOL on March 25 when she failed to report for duty. Thirty days later, she was charged with desertion.

I think there are a lot of things the military does well in treating its soldiers.
But then, there is another list of things the military does incredibly crappy at with regards to treating its soldiers.

Hopefully, cooler heads can prevail and realize that this kid NEEDS her mother.
Otherwise, I hope every mother and father out there sees this article and thinks hard on it before enlisting or commissioning. Cause while you may be happily married, there is a LONG LIST of things that could pop up that you would think should rationally require you to go home, but the military won't agree...

Parenting takes precedence over war

With the husband committing acts of domestic violence, it would be STUPID and CRIMINAL to keep the child in that environment.

If a husband commits acts of domestic violence, do you think the mother should stay with him for the sake of maintaining a "mother and a father" in the same home for the child?

How wonderful! The mother needs to care for her child, and our military FIRES HER.
And there are hundreds of shore duties she could have gone to and done a job for the military in the U.S.

I see this as a step up from the previous "pathetic" level, but still hundreds of rungs below "good".

You need to start answering questions about REAL situations instead of the hypothetical fantasy land in your head which ignores the REAL situations...
