Nope. I don't think it's right. I don't think it will change, though. When my sons are "that age" I will have to get caller ID and simply screen my calls.

I'm almost with you, Tristan. Yes, the kids have to register when they are 18, but I don't think the schools should be giving (or be required to give) out this personal information. I also agree with allowing the military branches a "career day" kind of forum to present to the kids. I have no problem with that whatsoever.

I'll second that Nutty. Having it as a career day is good, cause those interested in joining can give their concent then to be contacted about information regarding their intrests...But just giving over the personal information of the kids by the schools to the recruiters, to me, is an invasion of privacy for those kids who may not be interested or otherwise unable to join the military.

Just curious - we know that it's mandatory for 18year olds to register. Now, if the schools don't provide the information, is there any way for the government to verify compliance? These kids (probably) can't be traced yet through social security cards. Other than drivers' licences, is there any way for the government to check on kids?

Good question, JHB. I actually was going to post the Do Not Call Registry as a thread topic. Did you know that anything called a survey is not subject to the restrictions? Also, During election time, the policians use this exemption to their advantage. The are not answerable to this. This was only establishedto try to stop the annoying sales calls we all get; but it sure needs overhaul.

I am already getting SEVERAL calls from candidates a week.

I told the last few people who called that if they called me again, I would only be able to take it as they are not able to listen to what I want and will never vote for their candidate.

They keep calling.

And as you get closer to any election; whether it be local, state, or national; it will increase. Bet your last dollar on that.
I have found that some enterprising and annoying companies have figured a way to "step" the call to you; and avoid the paper trail if someone were to try and bring litigation.

Wait a minute. You know, I've read the PATRIOT Act from start to finish. People keep telling me that we lost important rights to the PATRIOT Act, but can't point to even a single right they have lost. As far as high schools providing the phone numbers of graduating seniors, I've never even seen a hint of such a provision. I'm not saying you are wrong, perhaps I missed that part. Now, I don't know what the big deal is here. I graduated from high school in 1977. Even then, recruiters had the names and numbers of graduating seniors, and most, if not all of us, got those phone calls.

How hard is it for a kid to say "Not interested, please don't call me anymore."? In the end, its just a phone call. No different than any other phone solicitation.

Not hard at all. It is, however, my own experience that recruiters seem to have a bit of difficulty understanding and/or honoring that request.
