I don't think that it is wrong.

I DO think that any initial meeting should REQUIRE the the recruiters set up with the child AND the parent(s).

Now, I don't know what the big deal is here. I graduated from high school in 1977. Even then, recruiters had the names and numbers of graduating seniors, and most, if not all of us, got those phone calls.

How hard is it for a kid to say "Not interested, please don't call me anymore."? In the end, its just a phone call. No different than any other phone solicitation.

High schools provide info to the recruiters and pretty much anyone else, unless the parents opt out.

Here's the code with regard to the military. This is from the registration forms that we have to fill out each year. I suspect they used OCR when scanning the forms and some words don't make sense. What is "izenerally" anyway? I think it is supposed to be "generally." Anyhow, this was provided by my children's school district. My kids are in elementary school, but I still opt out of all dissemination of my children's info. I know the Patriot Act was under discussion, but I'm just throwing this in.

: Requires each school district receivinia assistance under the NCLB to provide military recruiters the same access to
secondary school pupils as is provided izenerally to post secondary educational institutions or to prospective employers. A pupil or parent
may request that the pupil's name, address, and telephone listing not be released without prior written parental consent, and the district

shall notify parents of the option to make a request and shall comply with any request.

I remember that financial aid for college required me to be signed up for selective service. I was not a citizen, but still had to sign up for it. I also remember a recruiter came to my high school to talk to us. I was not interested in them, and they were not interested in me since they do not make uniforms small enough for me.

Just out of curiosity: Most HS seniors are 18 years old. Age of majority and all that. Should they still be required to have parents present at the meeting, or are they allowed to make their own decisions?

I joined the Marines when I was 17 and entered 1 month after my 18th birthday. Times were much calmer then though. The only thing I shot at was a canvas target.

I started getting calls as a 16-year-old junior also. And I didn't turn 18 until 3 months after high school graduation. I think that probably 25% of my class was still 17 at graduation.

Geez, would they get a better education there than in high school? Granted, the military must be stretched thin with the men and women serving in the Middle East.
