Do you think it's right
that school districts give out the names and phone numbers of high school seniors to the Military for recruiting purposes?

I used to get phone calls every week from the military.

I think the school should invite the military to the school to introduce their programs..but not give out a list of names + numbers.

Like a career day.

They call on the average every other day. My oldest son told them flat out no, he wasn't interested, but Nick made the mistake of offering to meet with them. They even told him they would send a car to pick him up to take him to the recruiters office because his parents were at work.

Since they have to register at 18, I think the schools HAVE to do give the information, don't they?

I'm against it - but I think it's a requirement.

As long as the schools are publically funded and your children attend those public schools then the government has tabs on your children.

That was one of the many exciting and innovative features of the Patriot Act.

Whether it's right or not (and it's not), it's legal.

Thank our president for that one!

I don't. If seniors don't want to go into the military, then they should not be bothered with it. On the other hand, the recruiters would always show up at high schools.

I have to agree with that statement to a degree. I don't believe telephone numbers should be given out, period. Mailings, yes.
Also, there should be fool-proof exceptions in place for students with special needs, academically or with mental health issues. In no case should a child who is not intellectually or emotionally capable of dealing with the effects of being in a war situation be tempted or lured by the promise of education and job training skills.

In the US, public schools are frequent targets of military advertising, military ... By opting-out you can reduce the chance of personal contact information ...

How Do Students Get Recruited?

In the US, public schools are frequent targets of military advertising, military youth programs, and visits by military recruiters. The No Child Left Behind Act guarantees recruiters the right to private contact information for all secondary school students, so that students may also be contacted at home. Many school administrators and teachers are unaware of, or turn a blind eye to recruiter abuses of their privileges.

Recruiters employ a variety of ways to get personal contact information, including student lists from schools, JROTC, a centralized DOD recruiting database made up of bought lists and information gathered by the government, the ASVAB test and other standardized tests like the SATs.
