In the interest of full disclosure, I am a veteran of 14 years in the US Army, medically discharged with a knee injury. I was never a recruiter. What I find disturbing about this thread, reflecting a trend in our society, is the attitude of some that the military will never "get" my kid. I can't really elaborate on it more that that, and as a father, a bit of me understands. Still, it troubles me deeply for what it may hold for our nation.
Now, I agree with you on this, sir. I wonder if the parents of some high school athletes who went right to the professional ranks(Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett; for example) held the same distate for schools giving out the phone numbers to professional scouts? I'm of the thought that nobody should be giving out personal information on others without prior consent (written, in some cases).

It is a tragic state for our country - when for two centuries it was considered a mark of pride and honor to serve our country, and to sacrifice a child for everything our country stood for.

Unfortunately, the past 50 years has brought so many unjust military actions, and it has become so clear that those who are most fervently in favor of wars are not the ones who will be out fighting (and dying) for them.

We cannot disparage parents who don't want their children to be used as fodder in order for multinational corporations to further fill their coffers.
