When the principal came on the loud speaker, I had chills going up through my back. The principal told us that planes had been hijacked and flown into the trade centers. He then informed the teachers that it was o.k. to turn on the television for the class to watch. Then informed that if anyone needs to go home, that is fine. Working at a large facility, just north of DC in the USAF. The base was on lockdown for while. it was an interesting few days. We were locked in with only the TV and CNN "reporting what they knew". |

I was drinking coffee and watching The Today Show when the first report happened - then we sat and watched the second tower get hit live. We freaked out and went to a local cafe/hang out where we sat with about 20 other people and watched the news and saw the Pentagon attack.
Honestly, I thought it was the beginning of THE WAR. I was scared sh*tless.

That is a day that is seared into my memory...
I was working in Queens that day in an office with a big picture window that overlooked the Manhattan skyline. I was busy processing some paperwork when one of the other officers said "Hey, a plane just hit the World Trade Center!" Of course we all stopped and went to look out the window. We all thought that it was just a stupid pilot that had flown a plane into the tower. After watching and discussing for (I guess) about 15 minutes I turned to go back to my desk. That's when one of the guys said "A plane just hit the other tower." We all looked at each other for a minute and then turned on the radio.
I think that the most disturbing part of the day was watching the second tower come down. We were all standing outside at that point and we had a clear veiw. I had never felt as helpless in my entire life as I did when I watched that building collapse on top of itself. I felt history happening before my eyes but I mostly remember regretting that we had never taken the children up to the Observation Deck. It may seem an odd thought, but I was completely numb at that point.
