2) This is the big one in my mind... Why do you all post on the St. Lucia board?

I am just curious...
I started visiting the Yahoo message boards to comment on news stories. There used to be a MB connected to every story.

As a visitor to this country I learned a tremendous amount about what Americans think and how their opinions are shaped. It really was hugely enlightening, even though there were usually some non-serious posters and trolls too.

After a while you tend to come across the same people on different boards and begin to feel like you know them.

That's weird, because you really know nothing about them, or them about you, other than how they communicate in print. We all like to extrapolate about other cyber posters based on minimal evidence.

It's difficult to keep a MB on topic but they just reflect exactly the way people are in real life.

If you have a group of people at a restaurant or the infamous water cooler, the conversation usually follows the same track.

A few people with strong opinions want to dominate the conversation. Others are just looking for company and drift off into small talk (recipes??). Others sit on the sidelines and don't say much at all, but still enjoy the feeling of belonging.

I think the message board/ chat room has become a place for everyday socialisation for some people. They just want to share the details of their daily lives with others and glean some human warmth, humour, self-affirmation. All that crap.

Nothing wrong with that imho.

I use to participate at the Yahoo boards. Back when the forums were just starting up. This board is an evolution of those boards. It was a start and this is what arose from it. Nowadays, I rarely visit any of the boards except this one. Time is short and I enjoy good debate.

But I remember fondly the days of the VRWC

Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles

That I can completely understand. So far I think this is the answer I can relate to the most. I guess once you get used to a system it is also easier to remain there than try to drag all of our friends to a new place.

Surely the lack of moderation MUST get pretty annoying at times?

Well there is some moderation on Yahoo, if enough people report a poster then that person's account is deleted.

It can be annoying but it doesn't take long to skip to the next post.

Personally, I prefer minimum moderation. Let people rip into each other as long as they make their point. If they want to make small talk let them. Just like in real life. And I agree it's difficult to make decisions as a moderator and to appear to be fair to everyone.

I think it's best to leave people to say pretty much anything as long as it's

a) reasonably intelligent
b) humourous
c) entertaining
d) not just mean spirited
e) all of the above

Allow me to rephrase the question...

What ever possessed any of you, before knowing any of the others, to participate in unmoderated forums? To me, that's like a little church girl deciding to hang out in a biker bar in Tijuana...
For me, yahoo was the first boards that I found while reading the news. I didn't know this whole discussion/debate things was around until I clicked on the link at the bottom of a news story and found a WHOLE new world.... LOL.. I have many friends now from those areas.

It is hard to put in place a board and let others know about it, and not invite the IDIOTS while trying to broadcast it. Out of all of the yahoo discussion board bigot trolls, I have only seen three show up in the Lucia board, that were in the old ones.

What makes you think this board is "moderated" enough to keep those same trolls of taking over? The same people you think you have banned are still here, under different names, and how many times do you have to ban someone, before it is permanent? Do you monitor this? Do you monitor IP's where people sign on? Those same trolls from yahoo, are here, daily...... and run to yahoo only to broadcast YOURs and others on this boards, personal info, (they think)lmao.. anyway... I am not saying DTT gives out personal info, either.. so don't wad up your drawers... I am just saying, I know for a fact, that your info has been broadcast ALOT......

is garysher saying that he realizes he should be heavily supervised and moderated?
