| Single or Double Space after a Period? Which do you prefer? Take the poll... How many spaces do you prefer after a period?
A lot of people don't know that neither APA nor MLA writing guides require the use of a double space.

| For those of us old enough to have taken "touch" typing in school, there is supposed to be two spaces after a period. If you didn't double space after a period, you flunked.
However, this - like so many other (admittedly often useless) rules - has gone by the wayside in favor of sloppiness and brevity. On many many sites, double spaces are automatically converted to single spaces.

| I think people who learned two spaces growing up prefer it, but I just don't see the need. |

| There is less a need on computer keyboards. On typewriters, it was necessary - it really made it much much easier to read.

| I can see it being more of an issue with a monospace font. |

I learned to type on a manual, no power cord typewriter and the instructor demanded two spaces. I learned to type in the army so I guess the army standard was two spaces... but I often use three periods but usually restrain myself to two spaces. |
