Step One - Select a single city in order to identify price trends or to identify a historical price most accurately. Select multiple cities to compare pump prices between cities.

Step Two - Selection of time duration will define how long into history the prices will be displayed. In some cities only limited price history information is available and in those cases the line will be flat for extended periods.

Step Three - When comparing US cities to Canadian cities you have a choice of price units. The standard unit of measure in the US is dollars per gallon and in Canada the standard is cents/liter. Comparison of US and Canadian cities is done using recent currency exchange rates and uses the conversion factor of 1 US gallon being equal to 3.78 liters. For simple plotting of US cities use dollars per gallon ($/G) and for simple plotting of Canadian cities use cents/liter (c/L).

Profits at Exxon Mobil surged 36 percent to a near record $10.4 billion in the second quarter as surging oil prices helped the world's largest publicly traded company soundly beat Wall Street forecasts.

The company's profit - which amounts to a cool $1,318 a second - is the second biggest ever reported by a U.S. company, behind only the $10.7 billion Exxon itself earned in the fourth quarter of 2005.

The earnings equaled $1.72 a share, topping the $1.64 a share analysts had forecast on average, according to First Call. Total revenue in the quarter was just a bit more than $99 billion.

Gas price dip isn't easing drivers' pain in Calif.

As soon as Kelly Lionel saw the sign reading $2.85 for a gallon of gas, she told her husband to pull over.

"If you can find gas under $3, you're very happy," she said.

Like many Bay Area motorists, Lionel was relieved to see some reprieve from high gas prices that have forced her to make some adjustments to how she gets around.

She says she does not like budgeting her family's money, but high gas prices have forced her hand.

Every trip has to have a purpose, or even better, multiple purposes. She bundles errands, car-pools whenever possible and has cut back on roadtrips.

"I definitely plan where I'm going," said Lionel, who lives in Benicia.

Her change in driving behavior will have to stick. Prices are coming down, experts said, and will probably come down more in the next few weeks, but they are still high compared with prices a year ago.

The average price per gallon in the East Bay was $3.04 as of Tuesday, according to data from AAA Northern California. That figure is a 9 percent increase over last year's average of $2.80 per gallon.

The cost of crude oil has decreased by about $6 per barrel over the past several weeks, which has pulled gas prices down by about 15 cents, said Severin Borenstein, director of the UC Energy Institute in Berkeley.

Other factors include softening demand, higher gas inventories in the state and the absence of major disruptions to the market such as global conflicts or devastating hurricanes.

Many drivers say they have no choice but to grapple with the fact that gas is now a larger part of their budget, and it will likely stay that way.

"A year and a half ago, if someone had said, 'Gee I'm glad gas prices are less than $3,' you would've thought they were crazy," said David Hackett, an analyst with Irvine-based fuel consulting firm Stillwater Associates. "Prices will go below $3, but that's still really high."

Even as she has cut how much gas she uses, Lionel says her family's monthly gas expenses have jumped to about $600. Two years ago, she used more gas and only spent about $400 per month.

Filling up the tank of her Chevrolet Suburban costs nearly $90. She rarely fills all the way up to avoid sticker shock, but then ends up making more stops at the gas station.

She says she is considering buying a more fuel-efficient car than her large sport utility vehicle, but that would mean less space for her family of six.
