In my experience, if I can ask them enough history questions that they can't answer without some intense research and ask them to explain enough Biblical references that they didn't even know existed, they hush up and leave me alone.

Actually, it is possible to believe all that and still be a Christian (albiet not a fundamentalist one). There are some mainstream protestant churches that believe in evolution and the earth being billions of years old. The UCC is one of them.

Actually, most Christian churches nowadays are not literalists, not even Jehovah's Witnesses.

Sadly, I have found that to be true in my discussions. It has been my experience (and mind you, that I am only speaking of MY experience) that those that are not of any of the Abrahamic faiths tend to study them more than those who are.

It goes back to the basic question 'why do we believe as we do?' Agnostics, and atheists allow themselves a lot more lattitude in understanding such things than those that subsribe to a belief system. Neither is wrong, but each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Knight, by the same token, many atheists think theists are ignorant about what they think. In other words, they might think every Christian runs around thinking, "oh, you became an atheist because you're angry at God becasue something bad happened in your life."

As a former atheist myself, I find pointing out to them that I DO understand their arguments will shut up the more obnoxious ones.

(Yes, just as with people of faith, their are, IMO, "evangelical" atheists who give all the others an undeserved bad name.)

I've seen those done. I thought they were both pretty funny.
Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

If I were not agnostic I would have to say, "Amen!"

What the heck.

Amen!

Crazy... yeah with stuff like,

(for men) "You think lighting flatulence on fire is high-brow artistic expression."

(for women) "You think stopping to look at, touch and discuss at lenght every freakin' thing in the store is 'just doing a little quick shopping.'"
