This, IMO, cuts to the heart of the black-and-white thinking that's common to both the atheistic and fundamentalist point of view. It completely misses the point that while, yes, religion teaches that many things are wrong and are to be avoided by the believer, religion also teaches that we are not to judge others or delude ourselves into thinking we are superior to them in any way, shape or form.
For example, while we as a society are certianly within our right to lock up a murderer, I as an individual have no right to judge that person as another individual. I am to be polite, kind and patient toward all people.
I cannot see all ends or grasp all reasons. That's really the bottom line. | The fact that many pick and choose what to believe within anyone religion is merely factual. You stated already in this thread to reject the word of God is to reject God himself. So if your version of God says through whatever man made text that something is wrong you need to accept it or you reject God himself and there will be something grave to happen to a person who does this. And so who is black and white??. You are no different you just want to be. At least us atheists and fundamentalists believe what we say and aren't afraid to be judged by other people and in fact expect to be. If your religious dogma says something is wrong its just wrong and just because you may not suggest people undergo reparative therapy for example doesn't make the belief any different to a fundamentalist, you just want it to be and need to see yourself differently. There is nothing presented in this thread thus far that differentiats any particular religious belief from another. Thus far (and to use the example of homosexuality) you've presented the extremely PC.. "not that there is anything wrong with that" Twinkie defence. Your religious dogma says its wrong how people are treated based on that wrongness is irrelevant, the fact that your religion whilst claiming to be inclusive excludes people is the basis for the contradiction inherant in any religious belief. That contradiction exists in the we will accept you so long as you believe everything we do attitude all religious faiths have. It is irrational and illogical and I know you can't see the contradiction anymore then you can see the contradiction in saying this is wrong but its to God to judge because it is accepted religious belief and no-one questions it.
Really relgion teaches not to judge. I know its hard for you to conceive that you are in fact judgemental. You' ve been judging me since I started posting and you've made up your mind about me. Everyone is judgemental its human nature to compare and contrast and judge. I don't pretend otherwise. Nor have I pretended that I am humble but can aquire Godlike attributes.
You are comparing secular law which exists despite of religion with religious dogma. The apple and orange comparison you make to make yet another point which merely re-affirms what I have already stated is interesting.
As for Bahai and homosexuality. I don't care that you claim you are not as bad as a fundamentalist. To tolerate makes you superior to other people. I ACCEPT people. If that makes me black and white then good for me I'd rather that then the wishy washy. You cannot dodge the fact you believe in something that thinks gay people should be merely tolerated by saying God says I shouldn't judge, why blame God for your intolerance??. If you are a believer in Bahai and follow its teachings you believe you are superior even if you don't want to appear like a W. VA redneck. Its actually worse its the poor little homosexuals PC bull syndrome, I best tolerate them, its not their fault. If you are unsure of wat to 'tolerate' means I suggest you look it up so as to get a better understanding.
At least both atheists and fundamentalists believe what they say. I am sure if there is a God and I am wrong s/he'd prefer clear and unambiguous belief or disbelief
And as all religions claim they don't see themselves as superior but all claim to be the true vision of God, I suggest you look at your own word choice. You see yourself as above us atheists and fundmentslits clearly. The fact you claim your not superior is actually belied by your own lexical choice nd phrasing. And I also understand you won't accept the contradiction your own words and actions show becuase God gives you the permission becuase your vision is the true vision of God. And if its not the true vision why believe it?? Why judge and reject everything else in lieu of your current belief?? Because you believe it to be superior to other beliefs. Which places you personally above everyone who doesn't believe it because you understand the true God thus you are 'special'. Its not an unusal claim just making you aware that your words and attitude show the opposite to what you are saying.
