From the early 17th century when English settlers in Virginia purchased Africans from Dutch traders, and through the next two centuries with the Civil War and Reconstruction, the documentary explores slavery as more than just an institution of evil and persecution.

Rather, the film shows how slavery became the central economic base for the entire country’s development — a base that was dependent on the labor and know-how of generations of black Americans.

Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

That may be true. But the "Trail of Tears" wasn't voluntary by any means. Nor was the slavery mandated.

I can't really remember a time when there was freedom in America.

The declaration of independence and constitution was largely meant to express 'unalienable rights' only to the rich, white, male, land-owning class (a strata largely considered, at the time, the people which God had in favor). Mere political revolution only emancipates the people insofar as the people are in the same condition the revolutionary class is in.

Just put "for the white, male, bourgeoisie" in front of the 'unalienable rights' expressed by the US' founders and you can explain the enslavement and subjugation of the colored, the worker, and the woman.

Social reform since then has been a blessing in many ways, but we still have a long way to go to really consider us a 'free' peoples. At least on the level to be considered true to humanity's 'unalienable rights' conferred to them by nature and God.

Man, that's like asking me to write a book. That's perhaps a new thread, or at least give me time to compose such a long argument.

That's what many slaves were saying, too, when the economy started booming (due to slavery and cotton farming) and slave owners were considering themselves righteous "progressives" by providing for their slaves better (and in many ways [in the latter years], they were being taken care of better than the "free workers" of the north). But, just because some were happy, doesn't mean they were free. The 'progressives' of that day and under that social condition (slavery) are essentially equatable to the "progressives" (bourgeois liberals) of today and today's social condition (capitalism); that is, attempting to provide for the enslaved better but never suggest emancipation.

Yeah I'll bet. I don't see us "progressing any more though. I think the possibility of true "freedom" has passed.

I can see your point.

Yeah, you gotta watch out for me especially. In fact, I'm not even real.

I'm actually a raccon that's been trained to type.

What do you think of that?

I'm not even from the planet earth. I'm typing from the Andromeda galaxy on a light shift modem. We discovered your life form twenty of your years ago. Blah blah...
You know, how do those people write for sci-fi programs. That time dilation and stuff like that must get confusing after a while.

I can top you better...I'm MM, Knot, KOS, Tristan, Highway, you, and everyone else on this board. Also, I'm actually the real owner of the board, Ridin and Tad are characters of mine that I use to try and get people to donate to the site so I can rake in the big bucks.

Now try and top THAT one...
