The other "drag" costume I did for Halloween (and I actually wore this one to work) was a little more imaginative.

I put on a very "frumpy" looking dress, a kerchief over my head and a pair of old army boots.

When people asked me what I was, I said: "Your Momma Wears Combat Boots."

Ramadan is at a different time each year. Passover is an optional holiday most places.

While we are talking about dressing in drag, I put one of my mom's dresses on as a joke one day. She came home from work to see me wearing a knee length red one piece dress. It didn't look half bad since I'm relatively skinny. I just don't know how to do the "tuck" thing that Rupaul talked about in one of his/her interviews.

Those often aren't the only holidays at that time. Chanukkah and Kwanzaa are often in December. Not ALL kids celebrate those holidays. Making a more secular celebration of the season allows all the kids to feel included without making someone feel bad for being Jewish, Wiccan or any other religion. It allows kids to have no religion at all to feel a part of the festivities without preaching to them.

Similar to Muslim Ramadan, Baha'is observe a 19-day sunrise to sunset fast (and that includes no water) in March.

I don't expect society to stop.. or even slow down.. for my observation of that. I continue about my routine... nearly all my co-workers have known nothing about it.

Again, I realize I live in a culture where the vast, vast majority are Christian.

I don't expect them to quit celebrating their holidays for me, nor do I expect them to change to accomodate my religious beliefs and practices.

And I'd feel the same way if I were in a culture that was predominantly Jew, or Buddhist, or Muslim.. or even Wiccan.

It's ignorant and selfish to expect the Romans to quit being Romans simply because you're in Rome, IMO.

Everybody knows that Christmas is during winter break, but that doesn't mean that the school has to put up a manger and make the kids sing hymns. Easter seems to have varied dates, but spring break is always the first week of April in our district, no matter when Easter is.

it is not the job of the public schools to teach religion.

Have you ever met anyone who genuinely pursues the Kwanzaa "faith"? Or who even knows what it is??

Even in Africa nobody has heard of it!

And why do you assume that Jewish kids feel bad when their Christian friends celebrate Christmas? It's Rosh Hashana today and I feel no bitterness toward my Jewish friends!

Infact the schools around here are on holiday - I don't suppose the kids care why so long as they don't have to go to school.

Perhaps you should strive to be a lot less hypersensitive and a bit more tolerant toward your fellow travellers?

Let's make a distinction between what goes on in the public schools and what goes on at work.

You might be totally comfortable hanging out with your Christian coworkers and attending the company Christmas party, but that doesn't mean that captive schoolchildren should be taught religious doctrine.
