it is not the job of the public schools to teach religion.
Don't you think children need to be educated about each others religions?

You seem to be pathologically insecure about all this!

So they shouldn't have taken off school today for Rosh Hashana?

Those poor dears - having Judaism forced down their throats!

BTW are you equally opposed to children having secular docrtrine forced on them - such as the notion that "it's ok to be gay"?

And why do you assume that Jewish kids feel bad when their Christian friends celebrate Christmas? It's Rosh Hashana today and I feel no bitterness toward my Jewish friends!

Infact the schools around here are on holiday - I don't suppose the kids care why so long as they don't have to go to school.

Perhaps you should strive to be a lot less hypersensitive and a bit more tolerant toward your fellow travellers?

Go back and reread my posts. We're talking about what goes on in the public schools. I do not assume that anyone feels bad when their friends celebrate something. I am talking about public schools promoting religion and you're talking about travelling. I am praising schools for providing a balanced, religion-neutral environment around holidays and you're complaining that I am hypersensitive.

Do you think it is the job of the elementary schools to provide that education about other people's religions? Which religions should the public schools teach about?

A child's religious freedom does not disappear when he or she enters the school, but it is not the job of the public schools to promote one religion over another, lead children in prayer or provide a religious education.

It is the job of the parents to provide a religious education, should they choose to do so.

I don't think, for example, doing a Nativity Play, decorating a tree or singing "The First Noel" is going to kill any kids.

I would have no problem with my children partaking in such activities. They are undecided about their religion. But I am Baha'i and their mother is Wiccan.

What's wrong with a little immersion in/exposure to other cultures? After all, the line between "religion" and "culture" is fairly blurry. Hell, for Native American Indians, you CAN'T really seperate the two.

What's the big freakin' deal over kids being exposed to a little Christian culture.. especially when they live in a predominently Christian society?

Somehow, I think the people who get all uptight about this wouldn't blink if they moved to a Buddhist society and their children were "forced" to partake in Buddhist cultural/religious observations.

Seriously...what's the difference?

I WANT my children exposed to other veiws/cultures/religions.

All the major ones that are represented by the children at the school - Christianity, Judaism, Islam.

If they ever find a Kwanzaa kid maybe they should discuss that too) if anyone can ever figure out what it is!)

My children went to a Church of England primary school in London, which also had children of many other faiths. There was no compunction about discussing, say, Judaism at Hannakah, and what it all meant.

In striving to be more "free" and "equal" America sometimes end up being ultra-prudish and more constrictive.

There is a world of difference between a "religious education" and trying to convert children to a specific religion.

Exposure to a religion doesn't equate to conversion.

And what about childrens' exposure to secular doctrines? Is it the job of the public schools to promote homosexuality for example?

Again, partaking in some cultural observations is a far cry from religious indoctrination.

I have no problem with my kids singing "The First Noel" in school choir for the Christmas concert.

Now, if after the students finished singing during a practice session, and the teacher said, "Now, children. We just sang about the Baby Jesus. And you know, don't you, that if you and your Mommy and Daddy don't accept Jesus as your savior, you're all going to burn in Hell forever and ever..."

Well, THAT I might have a problem with. Although knowing my kids.. they'd probably just laugh at the teacher.
