LOL. NOT teaching about Christianity is 'discriminating' against Christians according to gary, but teaching about Christianity and totally ignoring Wiccans and Pagans is ok.

I guess that some groups are just more deserving of equality than others.

I don't have a problem with teaching religions other than those represented in the classroom population. And I don't see why it's such a big deal to work out an agreeable curriculum.

You can try to deny it if you wish, but the fact is that religion plays a huge role in our history and our lives.

It's churlish to pretend that it can be swept under the carpet.

Terrified? You assume way too much. I just see no reason to yield on this so that those people who want to get their religion taught to other people's kids can feel better about themselves.

Right now there is an education crisis in this country. Why take away from needed classroom time so that religion can be taught? Religion should be taught at home.

An elective class at the high school level is OK by me.

of course. After all, secular holiday celebrations that are inclusive for all kids just can't be tolerated.

Of course not! After all, if there is no one left out, who are the 'right thinking' kids going to feel superior to?

I'd add that, regarding religious classes and events at a public school, efforts must be made to accomidate all religions that are held by all the students if any religion is accomidated.

(Regarding days off for all potential religious observances, that is likely to be a difficult undertaking to achieve.)

Why do you think it should be ignored?
I can see teaching about various religions, their origins, concepts, and their historical record. It may help develop an understanding between younger people of differing backgrounds. However, what religions would you include? Exclude? How do you convey the religion's dogma and respect non-believers? Considering the schools I went to, the number of religions are large in urban areas and covering them all would be a challenge.

Finally, what makes you think that public schools can teach religion effectively? Were you not the one who was complaining about cashiers having difficulties making change.

"Jesus said onto Moses - Let my people eat free" is a distinct possibility with religions taught in public schools.

Teach your the children the religious values that you cherish. Do not leave that work to others.

I have no problem with schools and others "observing" Christian holidays -- because it's the most common religion of the culture I live in.

And I don't cry in my soup because nobody wants to celebrate Baha'i holidays with me.
Frankly I don't give a shit either so long as it is done in a way that is respectful of anyone who does not wish to participate.

For instance, I have several friends who are Jehovah's Witnesses. When they were growing up their mother asked the teachers to allow them to go to the library during holiday parties in the classroom and to the office or library during holiday assemblies. (There are always some staff in the office even if the rest of the school is in assembly.)

She was always accommodated. I would consider that respectful.

On the other hand when I, at age 16, decided to stop attending the mandatory Christian assembly that we had every Wednesday morning, I was threatened with expulsion. (It was a public school.)

That was not respectful.

Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

I think the schools should make reasonable accomodation for a child's religion, but they should avoid promoting any religion. If a parent wants to take a kid out for Rosh Hashana, then the child should be excused. if the Muslim girl wants to wear a headscarf, she should not be prohibited. If a Christian child wants to pray before his meal, he should be allowed to. I'm not looking to excise any mention of religion from the schools, but I think schools should not be promoting it or teaching it. parents are responsible for their children's religious upbringing, not the schools.

Have you ever noticed that the same people who don't want "strangers" teaching their children about sex are more than happy to have those same "strangers" teaching those same children religion?
