But I agree, I hate Texas too. I used to commute there every week or two, between the heat, storms, and all that "middle of nowhere", I'm glad to be from Ga. Since they never left Texas though, it's not like they know any better.

But I've been reading a few legal blogs, the FLDS have a helluva civil case here. And if the kids have been mentally altered from this, that's just more fodder for the lawsuit.
If the girl suing the FLDS can sue for forcing her to marry, the girls that turned out adults have a case as well for being held for a month under false pretenses.

Well yes, it's their home. But do they really like it there?

Between Midland/Odessa and Ft. Worth, TX, I could be easily lulled to sleep on I-20 when driving through flat country, looking at the horizon that spans for 20 miles, and looking north toward those oil derricks. And the heat in the summer is nothing to speak of, too. It is such a boring place to be.

When I got to Ft. Worth, there I was in cowtown, USA, home of the cow auctions. Look east on the turnpike and there is Dallas.

While the FLDS may have a case against the state of Texas, the young lady suing the FLDS may have a case as well. What goes around, comes around. I'm sure happy I am not an attorney.

Does it matter? As if kids living in dangerous public housing and trailer parks actually "like" their situation. I know I didn't "like" living right next to the projects. But that was where we lived.

You are crazy. This is a GREAT time to be an attorney. You have a potential 600-700 plaintiffs in this case. It's not "The FLDS" that is gonna sue, it's every individual person who might have suffered. At least 15 "girls" detained that were adults and the kids of the monogamous families. This might get huge. That one girl vs. the FLDS is a drop in the bucket comparatively. The lawyers knew it too. I bet they were knocking each other down to get a chance to get to represent one of these people.

I'm happy I'm not the judge that signed the warrant or approved the seizure. Someone's in big trouble.

Now that is something we both agree on. It is a tough job, but somebody has to do it.

Exactly, just make sure it's done right. And so far, no one has been able to do it, and just drives these people further underground....with good reason.

Although, I guess there's nothing illegal about being underground as long as you are abiding by the law.

Well, it seems that CPS did not follow the proper procedures for their raid. How disappointing. The state overstepped it's bounds in this case and unless they appeal successfully, the kids must be returned within 10 days. You would think that after a 4 year investigation, they could have handled this the right way. I guess you are right about that fx. I still disagree with you rationale for the FLDS's not abusing children. I don't think this is the last we'll hear from this community, and I think the state will be much better prepared in the future. FLDS had better keep it house in order, as the CPS will be waiting for a chance to be reaffrimed in their position.

Thanks.

I think the FLDS does have it's house in order. That's what brought this ruling. None of the charges made in the warrant(s) panned out. Pretty much the same thing that happened at the Short Creek raid. It seem "learning from history" is beyond the Texas CPS. They'll probably just change more laws again.

I like this post on a blog.
anonymous said...Why is the ACLU afraid to portect civil liberties and children at the same time?

Why all this talk as if protecting civil liberties and the rights of children mutually exclusive?

It's irksome enough that CPS talks about it in this way when they respond that their obligation is to the child and the court has "broader" concerns (that pesky constitution and state laws)

How can children be safe in an environment in which the adults caring for them do not have basic civil liberties? How can we say they will be safe when the an anonymous call can lead to a knock at the door and their being carted off without due process? How many more children of innocent families will disappear into this black hole while the public mindlessly nods their heads in agreement to CPS press releases about the constitution being a hinderance to the safety of minors?

The bigger the lie, the more they believe it.

Did any of you watch the 48 Hours special on the FLDS? Have any of you seen the pics of Warren Jeffs kissing his 12 year old wife? And you are right fx, Warren hasn't always been their prophet, his father was the prophet before him. And his word is law to them. Even from prison. I loved seeing Jeffs state that he wasn't the prophet and that there wasn't any truth in him. They don't want people top see that confession fro him, but I saw it. I think he has realised what his crimes were. Good. If he really is religious, he'll suffer terrible guilt for all he has done to families and children. And you cannot fault TExas CPS for breaking up families, when their "prophet" has been doing that all along, when it suited him or when he was punishing them.
