Well my personal take is that while respect should be shown to all religions, It is up to an individual whether he wishes to be tolerant ( as all major religions propogate )... or fly off the handle ( as all major religious organizations propogate).

I'm going to have to sympathize with Jefferson's frustration for a moment here. I believe that such outrage over a rather simple depiction is overreacting. But this is coming from my own philosophy of individual liberty and the freedom of self-expression. If a cartoonist wants to show Mohammad in a rather offensive picture, although it may not be compassionate and tolerant, it certainly is his inalienable right to do so; and he shouldn't have to appologize to anyone.

But at the same time I think if we had understanding of other cultures, we wouldn't have this problem in the first place. First of all, if those outraged in the middle east understood the concepts of "inalienable rights to life, liberty, and estate" as many western cultures do, then I doubt they would be so outraged at something rather simple. Second of all, if westerners understood that depicting Mohammud in something like that is something that is forbidden in their religion, then not too many people will feel so compelled to piss a lot of Muslims off out of compassion and understanding. What if Muslims started intentionally doing something that was forbidden by Jesus? There would be an outrage. Perhaps an outrage just as violent or more violent than that of the Muslims. Take all of the attacks/bombings on abortion clinics for example.
