Human Definitions of God Need Revision
Quote:
The choice between the theism of the church and the atheism of those who reject the God of the church is to me a sterile and lifeless choice. Such a meeting between believers and atheists might lead us to examine what Paul Tillich called “the God beyond the gods of men and women.” If believers cannot have that conversation because it compromises their God definition, then that is a tip-off that the God they serve is in fact an idol and atheism is always a proper response to idolatry.
That excerpt by John Shelby Spong

ON FAITH is an article I happened across in the online version of the Washington Post, and felt it raised some points worthy of a dialog here among us Truth Defenders.

I think the first commandment is key here....you can't manufacture or design your own God without ignoring that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Bishop John Spong considered to be a real wack-job?

Oh the times have come.

2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

I perhaps got something else out of the article I cited in the OP.

I thought how to some measure, no doubt each of us, fabricates a God that we find palatable...

Thus the numerous religions and even moreso, denominations, synods, sects and cults.

Chapter and verse your God to be anything you want him to be.
And wouldn't ya know it? Doesn't your God always, always establish and enforce your own politcal paradigm?

As people, I do believe we are guilty of making a chameleon deity...

What people of faith always seem to forget is that every, and any, idea one can conceive about God is merely a theory or opinion. There is no truth past that point...

Then they try to argue moral and ethical points of view using their theory as the basis for logic.

Insane!
--- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope ---

There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence.

Hevusa from what basis ought man to make moral and ethical points of view to subscribe to in his own life and to promote in social establishment?
