Getting to know members
I noticed the biography section doesn't have much space for information in the member profiles so I thought it would be easier to get to know a member that arrived on the board much earlier than you if there were a place a new member could go to see a members background.

Like a member may be listed as living in Florida but may be in the Army, Navy or other service in a war zone. Could be easier to become familiar with those you meet that have been around longer on the board if there was a link to a voluntarily personal page. It wouldn't have to be full of details but just a down and dirty... here's an example using me...

Quote:
Born in WV on the family farm in 1948. Family moved to New Jersey when I was 17. Graduated high school in Princeton High Princeton NJ. Drafted in the army Nov. 67. Made army a career and retired as a First Sergeant/Master Sergeant in Jan. 80. Worked as a computer training specialist training soldiers around the world for the army with a private contractor following retirement. Married a woman in Germany from Puerto Rico and moved to PR and have lived there ever since.
You could see how something like this would be handy if you were a new member and wanted to learn something about a member that had been around for several years since it would be difficult to find an Introduce Yourself post.

In a perfect world personal info on the internet would be fine. But as it stands there are weirdos out there that want to cause harm o other people for what ever reason. Therefore personal info on the internet is a BIG NO-NO.

Overtime I have met many people on these boards and I think time is the best way to get o know on the internet.

or, you run into people (and there is at least one of these known on this forum) who takes personal information and twists and distorts it into outrageous scenarios.

I was born in a one room shack in 1957 as a poor black child. We were so poor, I had to share underwear with my 12 siblings (at the same time). When I turned 13, my family informed me that I was not really black - but white. They kicked me out and I had to fend for myself doing stand-up comedy in seedy night clubs.

Yes he would...As well as others here in regards to the same person that uses whatever bit of personal information they can get about another to twist and harrasse members with...

Sorry but with the real risks of on-line stalkers and trolls that like to harrass, any personal information (such as real names, school information, etc. that can be used to trace people) is best kept private and on a need-to-know basis or between close friends one really trusts not to abuse such information.

Maybe you're right, when I first started to use the internet back in 95 I was on an alternative energy site from OR and they had political threads also... got in an argument with this guy, one of three members there that thought I was a government spy... before it was over I was offering him half of an airline ticket costs to come down here and discuss it... I even gave him directions to where he could buy a street gun here in case he thought it was a sit up.

I guess the PM option is a good deal to learn more.

Yeah I think the PM option is a good idea. But so is time. I've known some of the posters on this board for roughly 10 years or so and their postings say alot about about who they are.
