Because if it wasn't for the rain the South gets, there wouldn't be all that beautiful greenery and foliage the South is known for. Besides, most of the rain is in the morning hours, which also means that the days are sunny, blue skies, and absolutely gorgeous most days.

Mobile would be to hot and muggy for my tastes (north Texas is hot, but does not quite have that much humidity).

Actually, it isn't that muggy. You'd think it would be, but it isn't. The humidity is so different there then even here in Illinois. I can handle the heat in Mobile, but here I feel like I'm going to pass out when it goes above 80. That Gulf stream really makes the difference.
