Yes.

Example: Windows XP (first release) | XP Service Pack 1 | XP Service Pack 2

When Microsoft releases these packages they usually include a whole lot of fixes, additions, and changes for the better. Right now a lot of people are experiencing Windows Sidebar memory leaks, which hopefully will be a fix in Vista Service Pack 1.

I hear there have been an unusually high number of problems with Vista so I'm holding back, although I do like that aero feature it's more of a toy than a productivity aid!

I bought a new PC w/Vista installed and have had no problems. My understanding is that Vista sucks if you try to upgrade an older system running XP.

So long as I have XP/Home, why bother to change to Vista? It is like if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You hit the nail on the head. It seems Windows is becoming ever more redundant. Unless Microsoft gets their game going again they're going to lose the big players (gaming industry, etc.) to Mac and Linux. Frankly, I'd rather that happen. I'm tired of having to suffer memory dumps (blue screen of death!) and shoddy programing (in comparison) just to play my games.

If you don't have a dual-core processor or minimal of 2GB of ram, don't upgrade That's my advice!!
