Indoor Lighting: CFLs, LEDs, Halogen? Which is best?
I've heard that for white light, compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) are more energy efficient than LEDs.
The suggestion was that in other portions of the visible light spectrum (red I suspect, amber perhaps) LEDs may have a slight energy efficiency advantage over fluorescents.

Halogen bulbs are typically bright, sometimes 500 watts or more.
And they give off a lot of heat.
Would a 40 watt halogen bulb be more energy efficient than conventional tungsten?

What kind of bulbs do you use?
Do you like them?

We use mostly compact fluorescents. We love them. They last much longer than conventional bulbs, give off light that seems closer to natural and save on our electric bill.

I don't know anything about LEDs for general lighting. Maybe someone else does.

We have one halogen lamp. It does give off a lot of heat. I have used it mostly when doing photographs to create indirect lighting. ( By bouncing the light off the ceiling.)

I also have a light therapy floor lamp. It is hotter than a standard flourescent but cooler than halogen. I really like it for doing close work like sewing. It is supposed to give off light identical to sunlight. I can't say whether it has affected my mood any but it certainly has helped thread my own needles.

Thanks CF.

I like the idea of 12VDC LEDs instead of the standard 120VAC, because LEDs draw so little power that they can be driven by single deep cycle 12VDC storage battery. I use an Optima, and have had good luck with it.
The advantage of course is, even if the power goes off, the accent lights are enough to enable you to navigate around, to attend to whatever is needed.

BTW, the 12VDC LEDs may also be great for camping.
