Question California Police Department using taser on student

A little excessive??

UCLA cops taser ID-less student | The Register
Quote:
A video apparently showing a UCLA student being tasered by University of California Police Department (UCPD) officers has found its way onto YouTube.

According to a report on the university's Daily Bruin, the incident occured at around 11.30 pm on Tuesday when security officers at the Powell Library CLICC computer lab "asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check".

When he didn't immediately vacate the building, the security operatives returned with police officers to escort him from the premises. The Daily Bruin continues: "By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

"The student began to yell 'get off me', repeating himself several times.

"It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition."

The video shows the tasered ne'er-do-well shouting "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your ****ing abuse of power", while refusing to get up. Shortly thereafter, the cops tasered him a second time for his trouble.

Students who protested at the treatment were themselves threatened to keep their distance or cop a tasering. Laila Gordy, "a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident", claimed officers threatened to zap her "when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number".

Eyewitness David Remesnitsky said of the incident: "It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life."

UCPD officers later confirmed that the man at the receiving end of the righteous tasering was a student, but didn't name him or give any further details. ®

When the cop says get up, then get up. Simple. No sympathy from me for the punk. Since they are students, I hope they all learned that when a cop says to stand up, you better well stand up. The guy didn't have a card, he could not prove he belonged there, the cops told him to get out and he resisted. He got what he deserved.

The kid was resisting arrest..I do think he deserved the taser for not cooperating...but they should have dragged him out if there if there was more than one cop, instead of continuing to tase him.

"deserved"?
It isn't the cops place to figure out what kind of physical abuse that a suspect should experience because they think he "deserved" something.

And what the heck was he being "arrested" for?
And these were the UCPD. Campus cops.
What authority do they have to "arrest" anybody?

All the article said was they were going to escort him from the building. That's it.

Police violence should only be used as a last resort when the situation requires it. As a defense mechanism.
Not as a convenient tool. Not as a means to coerce somebody. Not as a first option.

In addition, another stupid part to me is how they told him to "stand up" AS THEY WERE TASERING HIM.
Make him lose all muscular control, and insist that he stand up.
Mind-numbingly stupid...

=================================================

SAN FRANCISCO - Few if any controls are imposed on police using Taser stun guns to subdue suspects, which could explain the rise in Taser-related deaths throughout the region, according to a new study released today by the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California.

"The lack of regulation of Tasers is very disturbing in light of the increasing number of deaths associated with their use," said Mark Schlosberg, the ACLU of Northern California's Police Practices Policy Director. "We fear that in the absence of strong regulations on how police use the weapon, we are likely to see more unnecessary deaths."

In an exhaustive survey of Taser policies and training materials in more than 50 police departments across central and northern California, the ACLU found that while stun gun-related deaths have risen dramatically, the weapon remains largely unregulated. Tasers work by firing twin metal barbs that emit a 50,000-volt charge into an individual, causing him to collapse from loss of muscular control.

Since 1999, at least 148 people in the United States and Canada have died after encounters with police who shocked them with Tasers. More than half of those deaths occurred in the past year, of which 15 took place in northern and central California.

What the video does NOT show is what this kid did to get the attention of the cops - in the first place.

I spent countless hundreds (perhaps thousands) of hours in college libraries and NEVER ONCE HAD ANY ALTERCATION WITH SECURITY OR POLICE. Not once.

Personally, I think "tasering" him was more humane than the old fashioned way - which was to pull out the old night stick and give a guy a couple whacks upside the head.

I also think this whole thing could very well have been some sort of set-up.

Obey the law. Do what the cop says. That about sums it up.

Here is the student's name: Mostafa Tabatabainejad

The entire thing was a set up to gain sympathy for muslims. They're experts at manipulating the media and playing the victim.
