Correct, H80. The paranoia of Stalin was almost legendary.

The Germans backed the National Socialists because they had no offsetting ideology. All the main political parties basically argued the same thing.

I didn't know that so many people, like myself, were even interested in the history of World War II. I could read and talk with you people on this topic forever; from the politics in Germany at the time, to the commanders and their battles and campaigns.

WWII has always fascinated me.

My mom was 15 when we entered the war, and both her brothers and her husband went off. Our family was lucky, of all my mom's cousins, brothers, uncles, etc, that went off to war, she only had 1 cousin that was injured.

My Uncle Jim was on Bataan, and walked the death march. Before the war, he was 5'10" and weighed 160, after the war, he could never get above 140 and was an alcoholic for the rest of his life.

I had another uncle that was on the USS Wasp when it sunk and survived.

I don't think there are many people of my generation who don't have some interest in WWII.

My father and all of my uncles who were of the right age served. Amazingly, they all made it home. 7 in all, I think.

Daddy was partially disabled -- a mortar landed in his foxhole, killing everyone in it but him. He lost a big chunk of one shoulder and suffered from "shell shock" -- what they now would call PTSD.

Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.
That's why I support the Pickens Plan. Check out the website at www.pickensplan.com. If you like what you see, please join me as a Pickens Plan supporter.

I don't see how anyone returning from combat wouldn't suffer PTSD. Whenever someone get sent to combat, they should come back with full disability. I'm sure blowing someone's head off and the fear that a sniper may be aiming at YOUR head is an "f"d up feeling.

My only connection, family-wise, to this is that my paternal grandfather was a driver in Patton's famed "Red Ball Express". He told me many stories as a child, and was in a photo with Patton and some other Black drivers that we have in our family archives.
My interest otherwise comes from personal research and a burning desire years ago to answer the question of "Could Germany really have defeated the Soviet Union" in Operation Barbarossa?
I came to the conclususion that Hitler and the Nazi Party's racial policies towards Jews notwithstanding; that by following the advice of some of the greatest, most innovative military minds at his disposal, there was no reason that Russia should have survived beyond mid- November, 1941.

My dad was a pilot in WWII. He never saw action in Europe nor the Pacific. He trained men how to fly the fighter aircraft.

In San Diego, there were women who were helping to build military aircraft during that war. The building where they were working is still standing, and is a SPAWAR department.

When I joined the military, I wanted to fly jets too. But I'm blind as a bat. So I couldn't.
