Don't you think that to just consider the actual fact about how the present is written begs questions of every historical record?. It's the job of the Historian to try and make sense of all accounts in as impartial a way as possible.

Yet, history is always written by the victors.

It isn't though, not entirely. In modern history, although we, in the UK and USA, regard the history of the first and second world wars from the victors viewpoint we have more than enough access to accounts of those on the "defeated" sides.
I think the advent of mass communication , photography and investigative journalism have all but destroyed that belief. Now, nothing is believed. Older history is obviously harder to verify and corroborate but at least no one in their right mind believes that the account of the "victors" is an accurate account of what actually happened,

For most of European history, only the elite or religious leaders had access to literature, which was often written in Latin, not the vernacular tongue of the peasantry. Most of the population was illiterate.

From about 400ad to 1200ad the only people that could write were the religious leaders and the aristocrats. Does anything else need to be said?
