Well yes, legitimate parties in the sense that they have a serious political agenda, but I suspect the party whose entire platform is based on something inane like outlawing Wednesday wouldn't gain much power anyway. The public would act as a check against such things. I don't know that the entire political system needs overhaul to allow this, (Though it might need overhaul for other reasons) a change in voting format would allow a slow change in the composition of the elected officials. This would provide the means by which a third and fourth party could gain influence to the point of becoming nationally relevant and facilitate a more organic shift in politics to a system that won't force people to vote for one of two parties (neither of whom may be putting forth a terribly great candidate) or throw away your vote on a third party.

The current parties have no real incentive for encouraging change and, as you eluded, are likely to quash any attempt to do so.

What I mean by "overhaul" goes beyond this.

In reality, there is no 3rd or 4th party that can field a candidate that has a legitimate shot at the White House, or national Congress. They're simply not on a level playing field. Unfortunately, there are MANY things that would need to be changed in order for there to be a legitimate chance for any other party candidate.

Here's a thought: Completely do away with any and all "advertising" in all media. Let each Presidential candidate have 1 one-hour television spot, during which they "present their case". Then have 2 or 3 televised Presidential debates - each with the 3 or 4 party candidates.

I don't know... It's a start.
