This would provide the means by which a third and fourth party could gain influence to the point of becoming nationally relevant and facilitate a more organic shift in politics to a system that won't force people to vote for one of two parties (neither of whom may be putting forth a terribly great candidate) or throw away your vote on a third party.
The current parties have no real incentive for encouraging change and, as you eluded, are likely to quash any attempt to do so. Μηδὲν ἄγαν
