And we all know how well UN sanctions work in bringing about change in a country's government...i.e. - Iraq, prior to March 2003.

Being the world's sole superpower kinda sucks; The US is condemned when it tries its best to bring positive change to this world...and the US is condemned when it doesn't.
No, the US I think will be forever condemned for NOT going in to stopping genocide WHILE invading to steal oil.

The problems in the Darfur region of the Sudan are due in part to a severe drought that dried up a once, very large lake, contributing to food shortages.
It's blamed on global warming in "An Inconvenient Truth."

I know...but an even bigger problem for me, albeit that one is pretty darn huge, is the fact of genocide and the way women are treated.

Yes, and until we put more value on the lives of women and children than oil and personal gain, it's going to keep on.
We talk of our children here in America as assets of the future, what do we consider those children in the Sudan, often born of rape into what "extreme poverty" doesn't even begin to describe. We say we are responsible for them, so why haven't we made a real difference in their lives?
And in reality, we are the cause of their drought, partly anyway, as I do believe in the science behind global warming, which is greatly impacting their food supply, forcing refugees from hunger to gather in groups near aid societies, making themselves as a herd of sheep to the wolves.
It's a sign that we as a society, the wealthy, western society, do not have our priorities straight, yet.
Our Task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, the whole of nature, and its beauty.
